2010 Spring and Fall Classes

Winter 2010 Classes

TITLE: Drawing the Head

CLASS DESCRIPTION: The first goal of the class is to improve the student’s knowledge of the visual nature of the head by using its structural and anatomical qualities.  The second goal is to translate these improved visual concepts into more accurate and expressive drawings. Drawing the head or drawing in general is an intellectual activity.  If the student does not draw from their visual concepts, i.e. volumemeteric shapes, but relies on their visual response alone the drawing will lack creative expressiveness and visual energy so the goal of this class to strive to draw past the outline.

MATERIALS: I have made arrangements with the Sheep Shed in Joseph to have what is needed available for the students.

PLACE: Eagle Cap Chalets conference room by the office.

CLASS DATES: Four Saturdays in January 9, 16, 23, and 30th.

CLASS FORMATE AND TIMES: 9 to noon, lunch break, 1:30 to 4:30. (We will work from plaster casts, the skeleton and live model.)

Spring and Fall Classes: Vacation & Learn

GENERAL STATEMENT:

School Room, Conference CenterThis is to be a six day workshop divided into two segments between drawing and painting. Hosted at Eagle Cap Chalets lower conference room, right on the Wallowa River at the head of Wallowa Lake.
The first segment will be a two day drawing workshop followed by a four day painting workshop held consecutively for a total of six days. I will use live models throughout both workshops. Participates can do the drawing workshop only, the painting workshop only or both for the total six days. It is recommended that participates have basic drawing and basic painting experience. I will lecture to the group plus individually and I will also be painting along with the students as well as doing demonstrations for the whole group. The individual days will be divided between a morning session (9am to12.30) and afternoon session (2pm to 5pm) and there will be a general discussion and critic on the final session of the workshop (Sunday afternoon). Free time can be spent exploring this most beautiful area.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVE:

Classroom Interior. To give the students concepts and methods for a better understanding of their visual field; to bring a greater clarity and objectivity to their visual focus then transferring those observation to the picture plane. To give the students the tools for them to use when they are back in their studios working on their painting or drawing to critique their progress and help them work through the problems that will arise; and finally to give them information to use to create stronger and more knowledgeable paintings and drawings.

DRAWING:

Drawing classes are not schedoled for 2010 yet.. please check back!

FIGURE PAINTING:

Karate is analogous to figure and portrait painting; in karate a three legged stool is the metaphor used in expressing the paradigm used for development and growth in martial arts. The legs of that stool are kata, progressions, and kumita take one leg away and the stool will not stand. The three legs of the stool in figure and portrait painting are 1.Analytical skills (intellectual curiosity) 2.Sensitivity to surface, materials and emotions and 3.Kinetic awareness (painting is a full body endeavor). Figure painting requires, of the artist, to have clear pictorial concepts, full concentration and in the moment attentiveness to pictorial development and materials to guide them to a successful conclusion of their art.

PAINTING WORKSHOP TOPICS FOR REVIEW:

  • Overview of materials and painting grounds
  • Thinking visually (most questions that arise in the process of painting are answered by referring to the initial pictorial concept).
  • Shape recognition and shape placement (translating one’s three dimensional visual world on to the two dimensional picture plane)
  • Organization of picture plane ( design and composition)
  • Color (in realist painting the two most important components are value and temperature as opposed to local color.
  • Gestural dynamics (learning to recognize their visual presence and learning to connect to their kinetic presence.
  • Gestural recognition
